MedModel in Action

Bed Demand Modelling

This following short screen capture shows an analysis of 2000 actual inpatient encounters occuring over one month in a major regional hospital.  Data input is a simple spreadsheet of typical patient data.  The model was built to show bed demand for its different wards resourced by speciality.  The client also wanted to know  - How many beds would the nearby local hospitals need if elective surgery patients were to be treated at their local hospital.  By assigning address and surgical case type attributes it was easy to show the answer.

The dynamic plots show the bed demand over the month.

Coming Soon - Cardiology Clinic Model

The impact of a single key resource being absent from duty on a clinic day is well illustrated in the results of this simulation model.

Scenario 1

The total costs incurred during an 8.5-hour clinic were $9,158, using a full staff complement. 105 patients were seen. 61% of the resource cost was incurred in direct patient contact and the average cost per patient encounter was $96.00.

Scenario 2

Removing a single key resource resulted in the following. The total cost of the clinic was $8,772. Only 67 patients were seen and the cost attributed to direct patient contact dropped to 43%. The cost of the encounter increased to $ 131.00. Also of interest is that patient time in clinic increased from 130 mins to 173 mins. The patient was 'blocked' in the system for 53% in scenario 1 and 72% in scenario 2.

This simple example, using Medmodel® demonstrates the power of simulation to evaluate several performance indicators simultaneously - service delivery, patient throughput and cost per encounter. Of equal importance it allows you to plan for these occurrences and lessen their impact on your patient satisfaction and productivity.
